Our Vision and Aspirations

Our Vision and Aspirations for Te Wāotū

It is our vision that the whenua is returned to Ngāti Huri rehabilitated and that our wāhi tapu are restored and we have pathways between them for use, education and enjoyment for ngā uri o Ngāti Huri.

In the context of Te Wāotū we assert our rights to be involved meaningfully in decision making over our lands and waters

Underpinning this vision are some key aspirations that we have for our whenua.

These are:

  • It is our aspiration that we will represent the histories, pūrākau and knowledges that are intimately connected to the places within Te Wāotū.

  • It is our aspiration that we will reconnect to our pā sites, ancestral sites and cultural landscapes ā-tinana, ā-hinengaro, and ā-wairua to enable Ngāti Huri to heal and thrive. It is our aspiration that our Pā sites and sites of ecological and cultural significance will be reconnected to each other through pathways that we can use to move between sites.

Legal access in perpetuity to our sites must be secured to reconnect.

  • It is our aspiration that we work towards restoration of each pā site, with each pā site having a different purpose suitable for its history, positioning, and wairua. Some spaces for healing and connection, others for cultural tourism and education.

  • It is our aspiration that we can revitalise ancestral wisdom and models of learning with and through the land and ancestral sites. These will be a space of rongoā and education and will provide opportunities for Ngāti Huri and will be a welcoming space for all peoples.

Our Vision Statement for Te Wāotū is part of our overarching vision statement for the hapū. It is shared in order to demonstrate the vision and aspirations that we have for our lands, waters, environment and peoples.

Vision statement for Ngāti Huri

PĪATAATA TE AHI KĀ MŌ AKE TONU

TO KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING BRIGHTLY AT ALL TIMES

The whenua and marae are the centre of our cultural identity and are pivotal in our wellbeing as individuals and as a collective. It is our vision that Pikitū Marae and the surrounding environment is a welcoming, safe, resilient, vibrant and sustainable place, where:

∙ Individuals respect each other and the natural world we live in.

∙ We know our whakapapa, histories, reo and tikanga.

∙ We honour our tūpuna and live their values in our everyday lives.

∙ We are active kaitiaki of our taonga (built and natural), taiao and heritage.

This is our vision statement to ensure that the homes fires of Ngāti Huri hapū and Pikitū marae burn brightly for the benefit of current and future generations.

Te Tiriti o Waitangi is the foundation for the enduring relationship between the Crown and Māori and is important for all of Aotearoa. Te Tiriti o Waitangi guaranteed Māori tino rangatiratanga over their lands, waters and all taonga. The principle of partnership, a core principle of Te Tiriti, requires that power and authority is shared between Pākehā and Māori.
